Putting Wine With Food: An Introduction

Published by Guest Author at 9:11 am under Wine

A huge number of people enjoy a glass of wine when out with friends or when enjoying food, but a lot of people are confused when it comes to properly matching food and wine together. Although there are no definitive rights or wrongs when it comes to matching food with wine, there are a few general rules to help you match complementing flavours.

So to help out with that, here’s a quick reference guide to help you effectively match your food and wine. We’ll have a look at red grape varieties first, looking at which foods compliment them the best:

Barbera
This is a popular Italian wine that goes extremely well with tomato-based dishes such as lasagne and spaghetti bolognaise.

Cabernet Sauvignon
These wines tend to be medium to full bodied and go extremely well with roast lamb and roast beef.

Merlot
Merlots go beautifully with roast chicken and will also work with duck or turkey, making them perfect for those Sunday roasts.

Pinot Noir
Another one that’s perfect for Sunday dinners or for Christmas, a pinot noir will beautifully complement a roast turkey or roast lamb.

Corporate Etched Wine

Syrah
These wines are full bodies and go wonderfully with winter foods. Sryah’s perfectly compliment grilled steak and fit nicely with most roasted vegetables.

So that should give you an idea of what grape varieties to go for the next time you’re planning on cooking. If you prefer a crisp white wine, here’s a rough guide to help you choose when you’re trying to buy wine online or at the off-license for the next dinner party you’re hosting:

Chardonnay
Chardonnays match up perfectly with roasted turkey or chicken and will also fit beautifully with fish dishes.

Sauvignon Blanc
One of the great French wines that goes extremely well with a variety of different cheeses including blue cheese and goat’s cheese.

Reisling
Reislings go wonderfully with chicken based curries (like kormas) and will also work amazingly well with a Thai green curry.
